Narendra Modi gifts Russian translation of Thirukkural to Vladimir Putin
During the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural. The ancient Tamil literary classic, attributed to the poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar, consists of 1,330 couplets covering themes of ethics, politics, and love.
The Russian edition was translated by Naira Mkrtchyan and published by the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. Mkrtchyan noted that she used an English version for the translation as she does not speak Tamil. The gift is viewed as a gesture of cultural diplomacy, highlighting India's heritage and the historical connection between Russian intellectual circles and Indian philosophy, previously noted in the interest of figures like Leo Tolstoy.
The meeting between the two leaders also focused on bilateral cooperation in sectors including defense, energy, and space, with a shared goal of reaching a $100 billion trade target by 2030.
