Narendra Modi Stadium stands as world's largest cricket venue

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, stands as the world’s largest cricket stadium, featuring a capacity of approximately 132,000 seats. Located within the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex and owned by the Gujarat Cricket Association, the facility was completely rebuilt from the former Motera Stadium between 2015 and 2020.

The reconstruction project, which cost an estimated 800 crore rupees (approximately $100 million USD at the time), expanded the capacity from 54,000 to 132,000, surpassing Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Ground. Tata Steel supplied over 11,000 tons of reinforced steel for the project, accounting for roughly 75% of the total 15,000 tons required.

Designed by the architectural firm Populous, the stadium utilizes a bowl-shaped layout with two large tiers to ensure direct sightlines for spectators. The design also includes a specialized access system where spectators are elevated to a 12-meter high plaza to separate pedestrian movement from vehicle traffic.
