India: PM Modi warns of ‘dimagi Naxals’ threat
During his 80th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that while armed Naxalism has been largely eliminated, a new threat exists from ‘dimagi Naxals’ (intellectual Naxals). He alleged that individuals with a Maoist mindset have historically influenced public policy and served as government advisors, and called for these elements to be ‘identified and isolated’ to protect national development.
The remarks sparked intense political backlash from the opposition. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram responded on social media, stating, “I am proud to be a dimagi naxal,” and characterized the term as a new political label used to target critics, similar to previous terms like ‘urban Naxals.’ Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the Prime Minister of using the phrase to stigmatize dissent and described the rhetoric as a sign of political desperation.
In response to the controversy, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that the Prime Minister was not targeting opposition leaders, but rather those who support Maoists, separatists, or seek to undermine the Indian Constitution and national unity. Additionally, the Prime Minister announced plans to establish a modern, volunteer-based Civil Defence network to address evolving internal and external security threats, including potential attacks on critical infrastructure.
