Narges Mohammadi reports rising repression and resistance in Iran

Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has reported that repression and economic hardship in Iran have intensified over the last 18 months. In recent interviews, Mohammadi stated that the combination of external war and internal crackdowns has left citizens with ‘no room for people to breathe.’

Mohammadi, who was temporarily released on medical grounds after losing consciousness in prison, detailed her own experiences with state violence, including being beaten by security forces in Mashhad and being held in solitary confinement. She currently faces cumulative sentences exceeding 16 years and over 100 lashes.

Despite the crackdown, Mohammadi noted a ‘wave of resistance’ and growing rights awareness among younger Iranians, a movement she links to the 2022 protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini. Her memoir, ‘A Woman Never Stops Fighting,’ which was written partly in prison, is being released in multiple languages, with English and Farsi editions planned for 2027.
