Nariño celebrates 122 years, governor highlights peace‑driven development gains

On August 6, the Colombian department of Nariño marked its 122nd anniversary. Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar Jaramillo used the occasion to argue that lasting peace requires public investment, education, infrastructure and economic opportunities.

He cited data showing a drop in homicide rates in Tumaco from 75 per 100,000 in 2022 to 14.4 per 100,000, and a roughly 50 % reduction in violent deaths across the region between 2024 and 2025. The administration also reported progress in poverty reduction, expansion of higher education and improved connectivity, urging the rest of the country to listen to the department’s results.
