Nariño commemorates 122 years of regional history and identity

The Colombian department of Nariño is commemorating 122 years since its official creation on August 6, 1904, via Law 1. The region is named in honor of Antonio Nariño, an Independence hero and precursor of human rights.

Nariño's identity is shaped by its diverse geography, spanning from the Andean zone to the Pacific coast. Its capital, Pasto, serves as a major cultural and educational hub, notably home to the Carnival of Blacks and Whites, which is recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Despite its strategic importance due to its border with Ecuador and access to the Pacific Ocean, the department faces ongoing challenges, including the need for improved infrastructure, job creation, road connectivity, education strengthening, and environmental protection.
