Colombia faces dual crisis of earthquake recovery and widespread forest fires

Colombia is facing a dual humanitarian and environmental crisis as the country struggles to recover from a major earthquake on August 10 while simultaneously battling widespread forest fires. The earthquake has caused significant destruction, with reports indicating hundreds of fatalities, thousands of injuries, and the collapse of numerous buildings and schools across departments like Valle del Cauca, Quindío, Risaralda, Caldas, and Chocó.

Compounding the disaster, the El Niño phenomenon has triggered a severe wave of forest fires. Approximately 340 municipalities are under red alert, with over 7,200 hectares of vegetation already consumed. The department of Tolima is among the hardest hit, facing dozens of active fires and declaring a public calamity to expedite resources. Other high-risk areas include Cesar, Norte de Santander, Antioquia, and Nariño.

Government agencies, including the UNGRD, are managing both emergencies. In Buenaventura, the hospital network is overwhelmed, prompting plans to deploy field hospitals. Meanwhile, Indra Group has pledged technological support, including satellite connectivity and drones, to assist in communication and damage assessment in earthquake-affected zones.
