Nariño leads Colombia in reducing road traffic fatalities
The department of Nariño has achieved the highest reduction in road traffic fatalities among Colombia's 32 departments, according to research from Universidad de Los Andes.
As of June 2026, deaths from traffic accidents in the region decreased by 25.7%, falling from 148 fatalities during the same period in 2025 to 110 this year. This represents 38 lives saved. Wilson Bucheli Ordóñez, the subsecretary of Transit and Transport, attributed the success to the ‘Conduce a 50, Vive al 100’ safe speed strategy, which includes awareness campaigns and infrastructure improvements such as new signage in 19 municipalities.
