The Catholic Church has issued an urgent call for institutional intervention in Nariño, Colombia, due to the combined impact of vegetation fires and escalating violence. In a joint statement, the bishops of the Ipiales and Pasto dioceses, Monseñor José Saúl Grisales Grisales and Monseñor Juan Carlos Cárdenas Toro, expressed deep concern over the humanitarian and environmental consequences facing rural communities.

Monseñor Grisales emphasized that the wildfires extend beyond environmental damage, directly threatening the livelihoods, crops, and water sources of peasant families. The emergency has affected numerous municipalities, including Cumbal, Santacruz de Guachavés, Los Andes Sotomayor, Cumbitara, La Llanada, Linares, Ancuya, Guaitarilla, La Cruz, Buesaco, La Unión, and Policarpa.

The bishops requested that national, departmental, and local authorities coordinate a strengthened response, noting that the scale of the crisis currently exceeds the capacities of several local governments.
