Narmada River motorboat sinks during Home Guard patrol in Jabalpur

A Home Guard motorboat sank in the Narmada River at Gwarighat in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Friday. The incident occurred while the vessel was patrolling the area following the opening of 13 gates at the Bargi Dam, which had caused the river's current to become exceptionally strong.

Reports on the number of people on board vary, with some sources stating approximately 15 personnel, including trainees and disaster management members, were aboard, while others reported nine. The engine reportedly failed after snagging on floating debris. Despite the strong currents and the boat sinking, all occupants were rescued safely, aided by the use of life jackets and the quick intervention of local boatmen.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the engine failure and to address allegations regarding the boat's capacity and the driver's conduct. Home Guard Commandant Neeraj Singh Thakur confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated. The incident has raised concerns regarding technical fitness and safety protocols, particularly following a separate fatal cruise accident at the Bargi Dam in April.
