Naro launches one-euro home scheme to combat depopulation

The Sicilian town of Naro, located in the province of Agrigento, has launched a real estate program offering homes for just one euro. The initiative, approved by the Naro Municipality, aims to combat depopulation and revitalize the historic center by attracting new residents and entrepreneurs.

The program is open to both Italian citizens and foreign buyers, with applications managed through the multi-lingual Case 1 Euro Naro online platform. While the purchase price is symbolic, participants must adhere to strict conditions. Most properties are listed as requiring extensive renovation to meet safety and local planning standards.

Prospective buyers are responsible for significant additional costs, including notary fees, cadastral taxes, registration, and the full expense of renovations. Some reports indicate a refundable deposit of approximately 5,000 euros may be required to secure a property. Additionally, owners must typically complete renovation work within a specified timeframe, such as three years, to ensure the buildings are returned to productive use.
