Narrabri plans giant monument to endangered pink slug

The Narrabri Shire Council is planning to construct a large-scale monument of the Mount Kaputar pink slug to promote tourism in the northern New South Wales town. The proposed attraction aims to join Australia’s tradition of oversized roadside landmarks.

The Mount Kaputar pink slug is an endangered land mollusc found exclusively in the high-altitude subalpine forests of Mount Kaputar National Park. The species, which can reach 20 centimetres in length and features a fluorescent pink color, was feared extinct following the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires. However, field surveys by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service have confirmed that small populations survived on isolated rock faces near the summit.

To assist in monitoring the elusive species, the Slug Sleuth mobile app has been launched to allow citizen scientists to record sightings.
