Narragansett, Rhode Island, sees 20-ton squid spill after truck accident
A tractor-trailer accident in Narragansett, Rhode Island, resulted in the spill of approximately 20 tons of squid onto a roadway on Sunday, August 16. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the trailer dislodged from the cab while the driver was negotiating a turn near the intersection of Point Judith Road and Galilee Escape Road.
The spill caused significant traffic disruptions, keeping the intersection closed for several hours until approximately 5:15 p.m. Cleanup efforts required heavy equipment and dump trucks to remove the massive amount of seafood. High temperatures exceeding 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit) exacerbated the situation, creating an overpowering and foul odor in the surrounding area.
Authorities reported that the driver and a passenger were uninjured. The Rhode Island State Police cited the operator for failing to secure the load. Local officials and the Narragansett Police Department have humorously referred to the event as the ‘Squidpocalypse of ’26’ on social media.
