NASA adapts astronaut training for commercial space stations

NASA is evolving its astronaut training protocols at the Johnson Space Center to prepare for a transition from the International Space Station (ISS) to private commercial space stations. Through the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program, the agency is working with private contractors and suppliers to ensure training remains viable beyond the current ISS operational window.

While NASA currently targets 2030 for the end of ISS operations, officials noted they are prepared to extend the station's lifespan if directed by Congress. Training facilities, such as the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, are being adapted to simulate new vehicle and module concepts. This shift involves a growing collaboration between government personnel and private industry to manage the next generation of Low Earth Orbit missions.
