NASA advances PRIMA far-infrared space telescope to next development phase

NASA has advanced the PRIMA (PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics) space telescope into Phase B of its development. This stage focuses on refining the telescope's detailed design and the necessary technologies required for the mission.

Scheduled for launch in 2033, PRIMA is designed to bridge the observational gap between existing infrared observatories and large radio telescopes. The mission aims to study the history and evolution of the universe by measuring far-infrared light, which will help scientists understand the formation of planets, stars, and black holes, as well as the origins of water on Earth.

The telescope will feature an actively cooled 1.8-meter primary mirror made of aluminum and will carry two scientific instruments. The project's cost is capped at $1.2 billion, excluding launch and overhead expenses. International partners, including researchers from Germany, are contributing to the development of system components to stabilize and align the instruments.
