NASA aims to expand experimental X-plane aircraft portfolio
NASA is working to expand its portfolio of experimental aircraft, aiming to develop technology capable of flying higher, farther, and faster than in recent decades. During a recent presentation, Administrator Jared Isaacman teased a mysterious, dark aircraft that resembles a Blackbird, though the agency has declined to identify the specific plane or confirm if it represents an active program.
Isaacman has issued directives to redirect aviation research toward ambitious experimental programs, focusing on radical airframe and engine propulsion designs. These efforts are intended to support future civilian, commercial, or national security requirements. One existing project is the Lockheed Martin-built X-59, which aims to test quieter supersonic flight to potentially enable commercial supersonic travel over land.
