NASA and Claroty warn of cyber risks in space supply chains

NASA’s recent technical memorandum highlights the growing need for interoperability across space architectures, outlining standards development, spectrum coordination, and technology advances as key pillars. The expanding commercial space sector has introduced many new suppliers, manufacturers, and operators, which in turn broadens the cyber‑attack surface.

In a recent episode of the “T‑Minus: Space‑Cyber Briefing,” host Maria Varmazis spoke with Jen Sovada, General Manager of Public Sector at Claroty. They explained how vulnerabilities in the space supply chain can jeopardize mission assurance, stressing that cybersecurity must extend beyond satellites to launch infrastructure, operational technology, and critical manufacturing processes. The discussion underscored the importance of securing the increasingly interconnected space ecosystem as private companies play larger roles in missions.

Both NASA and Claroty call for coordinated efforts to develop common technical specifications, manage congested radio frequencies, and advance hardware and software capabilities to protect the sector’s growing network of partners and suppliers.
