NASA and ESA advance lunar and deep space exploration missions

Space agencies are accelerating efforts to establish a sustained presence in space. NASA is pushing to meet its Artemis mission timelines, with Artemis III planned for summer 2027 and Artemis IV scheduled for 2028. These missions aim to return astronauts to the lunar surface, specifically near the Moon's south pole. NASA is working to streamline bureaucracy to compete with China's goal of lunar landing by 2030, while evaluating lander options from SpaceX and Blue Origin.

Simultaneously, the European Space Agency (ESA) is developing the OASIS (Outpost for Advanced Scientific Investigation Station) project. The German company OHB has been tasked with the feasibility study for this station. OASIS is designed to serve as a power and communication hub on the Moon, providing essential infrastructure to keep scientific instruments operational during the two-week lunar night, where temperatures can drop to -150 degrees Celsius.

In deep space exploration, the NASA Lucy mission is entering its fifth year. Launched in October 2021, the unmanned probe is traveling to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids. The mission aims to visit 11 asteroids over a 12-year period to gather data on the early solar system. So far, the probe has visited three objects as part of engineering tests for its navigation system.
