NASA and ESA Deploy AI for Autonomous Space Missions
Artificial intelligence is now embedded in a growing number of space operations. NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency use machine‑learning algorithms to sort and compress the massive data streams from orbital telescopes and ground‑based observatories, to detect transient astronomical events, and to optimise communication schedules and collision‑avoidance planning.
On planetary surfaces, AI enables autonomous navigation: the Perseverance rover used terrain‑relative landing and self‑driving capabilities, while earlier rovers such as Curiosity employed AutoNav. The Ingenuity helicopter demonstrated fully autonomous flight in the thin Martian atmosphere. On the International Space Station, free‑flying robots like Astrobee test trajectory planning and crew interaction, and the Canadarm2 continues to operate with AI‑assisted guidance.
Ground teams are also adopting AI‑driven predictive maintenance. As explained by Dr. Sanjoy, anomaly detection, time‑series forecasting and digital‑twin simulations allow early identification of component degradation, reducing the risk of mission‑critical failures that cannot be repaired in situ. Development continues despite technical and regulatory hurdles such as radiation tolerance, algorithm certification and traceability of decisions.
