NASA and UCSD develop AI for early flash flood warnings

NASA and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) are developing a new machine learning system designed to provide earlier warnings for flash floods. The technology integrates satellite data, ground sensors, and artificial intelligence to help meteorologists detect flood risks more rapidly.

This advancement aims to address the critical issue of rapid water rises that often leave residents with insufficient time to react. Current monitoring by the National Weather Service (NWS) relies on rain gauges, streamflow sensors, radar, and weather satellites, alongside terrain-specific thresholds. The new AI-driven approach seeks to supplement these existing data sources to improve response times during extreme weather events.
