NASA and US Department of Energy partner on nuclear space technology

NASA and the US Department of Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding titled ‘Accelerating American Leadership in Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion’ to advance nuclear-powered spacecraft and lunar infrastructure. The agreement, which takes effect on November 1, establishes a framework for cooperation covering fuel production, advanced research, testing, and launch integration.

A primary objective is the 2028 launch of ‘Space Reactor-1 Freedom,’ a mission designed to transition nuclear propulsion technology from laboratory research to operational use in deep space. Additionally, the agencies are working toward the development of ‘Lunar Reactor-1,’ a fission-based surface power system. This lunar reactor is intended to provide electricity for future American Moon bases, offering a reliable energy source that can operate during prolonged periods of darkness or in permanently shadowed regions where solar power is ineffective.
