NASA announces $20 billion plan for permanent Moon base

NASA has detailed an operational plan for a $20 billion program to establish a permanent base on the Moon. Following the success of the Artemis II mission, the agency intends to return humans to the lunar surface by 2028.

Unlike the Apollo era, this strategy utilizes a gradual, three-phase approach to create a stable settlement, with operations expected to extend beyond 2032. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted the immense difficulty of the task, highlighting that astronauts have only completed a total of 80 hours of extravehicular activity during the Apollo missions over fifty years ago.

The project aims to overcome extreme environmental challenges, including temperature fluctuations ranging from 120 degrees Celsius to below -120 degrees Celsius, as well as radiation and meteorite impacts. Isaacman stated the investment is justified by the scientific research, technological advancements, and knowledge that will benefit life on Earth.
