NASA astronauts describe viewing auroras from the International Space Station

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, currently stationed aboard the International Space Station, have described the experience of viewing auroras from orbit as superior to seeing eclipses. Meir, the station commander, noted that the sun is exiting its peak activity period, which has resulted in particularly brilliant and dramatic northern and southern lights. She described witnessing a green aurora that appeared to move like a snake directly beneath the station, with the light reflecting off the exterior structure.

In addition to observing cosmic phenomena, the crew has been engaged in various activities. Crewmate Anil Menon recently participated in the first episode of ‘Chez ISS,’ a cooking segment featuring station-grown produce like mustard greens and kale. The astronauts also noted that while they missed the totality of a recent solar eclipse due to the station's position, they are looking forward to observing an upcoming lunar eclipse.
