NASA awards $30 million to university teams for aviation research

NASA has selected four university teams to participate in the ninth round of its University Leadership Initiative, a program designed to advance aeronautics research through student-led projects. The initiative provides multiyear support totaling approximately $30 million to help universities build research teams and conduct real-world flight studies.

The selected projects aim to address several strategic objectives, including the development of high-supersonic propulsion systems, low-noise flight routes for urban aircraft, and novel engineering methods for aerospace system design. Additionally, research will focus on learning-enabled avionics to support advanced urban air mobility and more efficient air traffic management.

According to Andrew Provenza, project manager at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, these awards allow the University Innovation project to focus on mission priorities such as commercial high-speed aircraft and the integration of new transportation options into the national airspace. The program is intended to develop the U.S. aeronautics research workforce by providing hands-on experience to graduate and undergraduate students.
