Apophis asteroid to pass near Earth in 2029, raising space debris concerns

The asteroid 99942 Apophis is scheduled for a close approach to Earth on April 13, 2029. Measuring approximately 340 to 375 meters in diameter, it will pass within 32,000 kilometers of the surface, a distance closer than many geostationary satellites. While NASA and other space agencies have ruled out a direct impact during this encounter, researchers from the Italian National Research Council have identified a new risk: the possibility of Apophis colliding with space debris in high orbit.

Other near-Earth objects are also being monitored, including 2026 PO1 and 2025 AL2, though current calculations dismiss any immediate danger to the planet. NASA expert Humberto Campins emphasizes that while the probability of a major impact during an individual's lifetime is extremely low, humanity must invest in planetary defense technologies to ensure long-term civilizational survival.

To study these phenomena, NASA is preparing the OSIRIS-APEX mission to observe Apophis following its 2029 flyby. International agencies continue to conduct drills every three years to maintain institutional readiness for potential asteroid threats.
