NASA confirms Orion heat shield performance during Artemis II mission
NASA has confirmed that the Orion spacecraft's thermal protection system functioned as intended during the Artemis II mission. The spacecraft, which carried four astronauts around the Moon, encountered extreme conditions during atmospheric reentry, reaching speeds approximately 39 times the speed of sound.
External temperatures exceeded 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 2,204 degrees Celsius), while the internal cabin temperature was maintained at roughly 23 degrees Celsius to ensure crew safety.
Following observations of heat shield wear during the previous Artemis I mission, engineers implemented strategic changes for Artemis II. These included modifying the reentry trajectory to reduce the duration of exposure to extreme heat and conducting detailed inspections of structural junctions and fastener areas. Post-landing inspections by U.S. Navy divers provided additional visual data on the shield's condition.
