NASA completes 378-day Mars mission simulation

Four volunteers have emerged from a 378-day isolation experiment at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The mission, part of the Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) program, utilized a 158-square-meter habitat constructed via 3D printing to simulate the conditions of a future mission to Mars.

The crew, consisting of mission commander Ross Elder, medical officer Ellen Ellis, science officer Matthew Montgomery, and flight engineer James Spicer, lived under strict constraints to replicate interplanetary challenges. Their tasks included cultivating plants in simulated Martian soil and managing communications with NASA officials through systems that mimicked the time delays inherent in interplanetary travel.

NASA intends to use the data gathered from this second CHAPEA mission to prepare for crewed lunar missions and eventual human exploration of Mars, potentially in the 2030s. The participants will undergo two weeks of evaluations and debriefings with scientists to share their experiences regarding the psychological and physical effects of long-term isolation.
