NASA Curiosity rover captures mysterious silhouette on Mars
A photograph taken by NASA’s Curiosity rover in Gale Crater has gained viral attention due to a mysterious dark silhouette that resembles a jellyfish or a mechanical creature. Although the image was captured on August 20, 2023, it only recently began circulating widely on social media in August 2026.
The silhouette appears as a rounded shape with descending filaments, leading to public speculation regarding potential extraterrestrial life or artificial structures. However, photographic evidence suggests the object is not a permanent feature of the Martian landscape. Comparison with consecutive images shows the figure was absent in shots taken 13 and 25 seconds prior, and it was also missing from a photograph taken 78 minutes later. This transient appearance suggests the anomaly may be the result of a cosmic ray hitting the camera sensor rather than a physical object on the planet's surface.
