NASA Curiosity rover discovers vast honeycomb polygon field on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a 360‑degree panorama of the Valle Grande valley on Mars on 19‑20 June 2026 (sols 4,930‑4,931). The images reveal an unprecedented sea of polygonal fractures – honeycomb‑like textures that extend across the entire valley and wrap around a 6‑metre‑tall butte named Miraflores. Each polygon measures roughly 4–8 cm (1.5–3 in) across. Project scientist Ashwin Vasavada described the feature as “a sea of polygons that took our breath away.” Scientists suggest the patterns could have formed by drying mud cracks, thermal contraction or long‑term sediment compaction, providing new clues to ancient water activity on Mars. The discovery adds to Curiosity’s long‑term exploration of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater, a mission that began with the rover’s landing in August 2012.
