NASA Curiosity Rover Finds Honeycomb Structures on Mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover, operating in Gale Crater since 2012, has identified extensive honeycomb‑like polygonal ridges and clusters of dark pebbles on the Martian surface. The grid‑like formations, captured by the rover’s Mastcam and ChemCam instruments, contrast with earlier orbital images that suggested a smoother, lighter terrain.

Scientists are evaluating several formation hypotheses, including ancient mud that cracked as it dried, basaltic columnar cooling similar to Earth’s Giant’s Causeway, and impact‑related processes. The dark pebbles may be debris from nearby cliffs, ejecta from ancient impacts, or meteorites that survived Mars’ thin atmosphere. Ongoing chemical analyses aim to determine their composition, such as nickel content that would support a meteorite origin.
