NASA Curiosity rover image of jellyfish-like shape attributed to cosmic rays

NASA's Curiosity rover captured an image on Mars in August 2023 that appeared to show a dark silhouette resembling a jellyfish. While the image sparked discussions regarding potential life on the Red Planet, scientific analysis has determined the shape was not a physical object or living organism.

Data from the rover's imaging sequence shows that the jellyfish-like shape appeared in a single frame, but was absent in photos taken from the exact same angle just 13 and 25 seconds earlier. This indicates the phenomenon was a transient optical distortion rather than a permanent feature on the Martian surface.

Experts attribute the visual anomaly to cosmic rays. Because Mars lacks a strong global magnetic field and has a very thin atmosphere, its surface is highly exposed to high-energy particles from space. When these particles strike the camera's silicon sensor, they can create bright spots, lines, or dark smudges, a phenomenon previously documented in Mars mission imagery.
