NASA demonstrates autonomous GPS-free spacecraft navigation

NASA has successfully demonstrated the Fast Autonomous Lost-in-space Catalog-based Optical Navigation (FALCON) system during the Starling CubeSat mission in low Earth orbit. Developed in partnership with EraDrive, the technology allows small spacecraft to determine their position, navigation, and timing autonomously by using onboard star-tracker cameras to observe other space objects, such as satellites and orbital debris.

By matching these visual observations against an onboard catalog of approximately 20,000 known objects, the system provides a reliable alternative to traditional GPS or ground-based tracking. During a three-day test period, the FALCON system autonomously refined and updated the trajectory data for more than 200 observed space objects without intervention from ground operators.

This advancement is intended to support future deep-space exploration, including lunar constellations, cislunar logistics, and science missions where GPS signals are unavailable or unreliable. The technology also holds potential for improving space traffic monitoring and enhancing collision avoidance capabilities.
