NASA develops precision telescope for LISA gravitational wave mission

NASA is advancing the development of a precision test telescope to support the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) mission. Led by the European Space Agency (ESA), the project aims to deploy three satellites in a triangular formation in orbit around the Sun, with each side spanning approximately 2.5 million kilometers.

L3Harris Technologies is responsible for the design, assembly, and integration of the Engineering Test Unit. This unit serves as the final testing stage before the production of flight hardware. Unlike previous metal prototypes, this version will utilize Zerodur, a glass-ceramic material designed to minimize shape changes during temperature fluctuations, ensuring the extreme accuracy required for measurements.

The LISA mission, targeted for launch in the mid-2030s, will use infrared laser signals to detect low-frequency gravitational waves. By measuring minute changes in distance between the satellites, the observatory intends to observe phenomena such as the merging of supermassive black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarf binaries that are difficult to detect from Earth.
