NASA Dragonfly mission installs electrical harness for Titan mission

NASA’s Dragonfly mission has reached a significant technical milestone with the installation of the rotorcraft’s electrical harness onto the flight fuselage. Developed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), the harness serves as the spacecraft’s nervous system, facilitating the transmission of power and data between computers, sensors, scientific instruments, and batteries.

The electrical system consists of approximately 5.2 kilometers of silver-coated copper wiring, 374 connectors, and weighs over 22 kilograms. The components are insulated with temperature-resistant polymers and aluminum tape to withstand the harsh environment of Saturn’s moon, Titan.

Additionally, the landing site on Titan has been identified as Ahmakiq Undae. This equatorial dune field, which spans approximately 500 miles in diameter, borders the Selk impact crater. Deposits formed during the creation of the Selk Crater are primary targets for the mission’s scientific exploration. Dragonfly is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2028, with an expected arrival on Titan by late 2034.
