NASA Europa Clipper Mission Faces Challenges in Detecting Life on Jupiter's Moon Europa

NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft is on a 2.9 billion‑kilometre journey to Jupiter to investigate the hidden ocean beneath the icy crust of its moon Europa. The mission plans up to 49 close fly‑bys to search for water plumes or warm surface spots that could reveal the ocean’s chemistry and assess habitability.

A new study published in *Nature Astronomy* warns that Europa’s ice shell may be a far larger barrier than previously thought. Simulations by planetary scientist Lujendra Ojha and his team show that water rising through cracks quickly loses heat and refreezes within hours, often before reaching the surface. This turbulence and rapid refreezing could make direct sampling of the subsurface ocean extremely difficult, complicating the search for extraterrestrial life.
