NASA evaluates toxicity of Martian dust for future astronauts

NASA's Martian Dust Limit Working Group has evaluated the toxicological risks posed by Martian dust to future astronauts. The dust contains perchlorates, silica, nanophase iron oxides, and gypsum, along with traces of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, and beryllium, which are linked to thyroid damage and lung disease.

Research indicates that Martian dust particles average approximately 3 microns, making them small enough to bypass the lung's mucus filtration and enter the bloodstream. Perchlorate levels are particularly concerning; with Martian dust containing 0.5% to 1% perchlorate by weight, inhaling as little as five to ten milligrams could exceed a person's safe daily limit.

Experts suggest that the primary defense against these hazards must be preventative rather than medical. Recommended strategies include advanced habitat design, strict filtration systems to keep dust outside, and rapid removal of particles if they enter living quarters. Panel members also noted concerns regarding potential exposure through food grown in Martian soil.
