NASA funds SPARK project to explore Titan's underground caves
NASA is funding a new project called SPARK (Solid-state Propulsion for Autonomous Reconnaissance of Karst) to develop a swarm of small, sphere-shaped aerobots designed to explore the underground caves of Saturn’s moon, Titan. The project is supported through NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program.
Led by Daniel Drew of the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, the mission aims to navigate Titan’s complex karst terrain, which includes sinkholes and subterranean channels carved by liquid hydrocarbons like methane and ethane. Traditional rovers face significant difficulties navigating such environments, making flying vehicles a more viable option.
The aerobots will utilize electrohydrodynamic (EHD) propulsion, also known as atmospheric ion thrusters. This solid-state technology uses electric fields to accelerate ions, providing silent, omnidirectional maneuverability without the need for mechanical parts like rotors or propellers. While EHD propulsion is inefficient on Earth, the dense atmosphere of Titan is expected to provide significant power savings, potentially offering over 100 times the benefit seen by traditional rotorcraft.
