NASA funds spherical ion-propelled robots to explore Titan’s caves
NASA is funding a new concept called SPARK (Solid-state Propulsion for Autonomous Reconnaissance of Karst) to explore the underground caves and sinkholes of Saturn’s moon, Titan. Led by Daniel Drew, an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, the project falls under the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program.
The mission proposes using swarms of small, spherical, lightweight aerobots rather than traditional wheeled rovers, which struggle with Titan’s complex karst topography. These robots would utilize atmospheric ion propulsion, a method that uses high voltage to ionize and accelerate surrounding gases to create thrust without combustion. Due to Titan’s unique atmospheric conditions, this propulsion method is estimated to be over 100 times more efficient than it would be on Earth.
The project is currently in its first nine-month phase, focusing on feasibility testing and numerical simulations. If successful, it will move into a two-year prototype evaluation phase. While NASA’s Dragonfly mission is scheduled to explore Titan’s surface with a rotorcraft in 2028, it remains uncertain if the SPARK aerobots will be able to launch alongside Dragonfly or if they will require a separate mission.
