NASA images lunar crater caused by SpaceX Falcon 9 impact
NASA has released images of a new crater on the Moon's near side, created by the impact of a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage. The crash occurred on August 5th when the 4,000 kg stage, which had delivered lunar landers toward the Moon, struck the surface at approximately 9,000 km/h near the Einstein crater.
Between August 11th and 12th, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured the site from an altitude of about 96 km. The resulting images show a crater measuring approximately 18 meters wide and 3 meters deep. The impact site features bright white rays and splotches of ejecta, consisting of fresh material excavated from beneath the lunar surface, which contrasts with the darker surrounding material.
To capture the images, the LRO required precise maneuvers and timing to ensure the crater remained in view during its polar orbit. Additionally, South Korea's Danuri spacecraft assisted in confirming the location, following data provided by NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies.
