NASA introduces Competition Model 2.0 to accelerate scientific missions

NASA has unveiled Competition Model 2.0 (CM 2.0), a new approach designed to accelerate the selection of scientific missions and reduce costs. The model aims to significantly shorten evaluation timelines; for instance, the selection period for certain missions is expected to drop from approximately 35 months to 19.5 months, while smaller missions could see reductions from 32 months to 19 months.

A core component of the reform is prioritizing scientific merit over engineering and financial planning in the initial stages. By focusing on scientific arguments, application plans, and basic proofs of concept first, NASA intends to reduce bureaucracy and allow for more creative proposals. This shift is intended to provide more equitable opportunities for researchers and smaller teams who may lack the massive institutional support of major universities or industrial giants.

Under the new model, the roles of the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will be expanded to assist in mission preparation. While large flagship missions will continue to follow existing procedures, the CM 2.0 model will apply to other programs, aiming to move ideas from conception to orbit more rapidly and efficiently.
