NASA explores returning SR-71 Blackbird to flight

NASA is reportedly exploring a project to return the legendary SR-71 Blackbird to flight status, nearly 27 years after its last mission. Satellite imagery shows that NASA aircraft tail number 844 was moved from its outdoor display at the Armstrong Flight Research Center to a hangar for inspection earlier this year.

Reports indicate that NASA has contacted several former engineers and specialists associated with the original Blackbird program to discuss potential involvement in a return-to-flight effort. While the agency has not officially confirmed a restoration program, Administrator Jared Isaacman recently hinted at a mission to fly ‘high and fast again’ while discussing the rebuilding of the agency’s X-plane portfolio.

Reactivating the Mach 3-capable aircraft presents significant technical challenges, including the need for specialized parts, unique JP-7 fuel, and the loss of much specific technical expertise. The project could serve as a platform for testing new breakthroughs in high-speed aeronautics, propulsion, and digital engineering.
