NASA launches Adopt a Pixel initiative for Roman telescope
NASA has launched the ‘Adopt a Pixel’ initiative, a free program that allows members of the public to symbolically adopt one of the 300 million pixels from the first images of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
Participants receive a numbered pixel and a personalized certificate. This number will allow individuals to identify their specific pixel once the mission's images are released. The initiative focuses on the telescope's Wide Field Instrument (WFI), an infrared camera composed of 18 detectors.
The Roman Space Telescope is designed to provide resolution similar to the Hubble Space Telescope but with a significantly larger field of view, enabling astronomers to map vast regions of the universe more rapidly. The mission aims to investigate dark energy, dark matter, galaxy evolution, and the discovery of thousands of new exoplanets.
