NASA launches Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to study the cosmos

NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The observatory is currently traveling to the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), located approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, where it will begin scientific operations following a three-month transit.

The mission aims to investigate fundamental cosmic mysteries, specifically dark energy and dark matter, while mapping vast regions of the sky. Equipped with a 2.4-meter primary mirror and a Wide Field Instrument, the telescope possesses a field of view up to 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope. This capability allows it to conduct large-scale surveys, potentially discovering up to 100,000 new exoplanets and observing billions of galaxies.

NASA expects to release the first images from the telescope in early 2027. The mission is designed for a primary five-year duration, with the potential for a five-year extended mission. To encourage public engagement, NASA has launched the ‘Adopt a Pixel’ campaign, allowing individuals to symbolically reserve a pixel in the telescope’s upcoming images.
