NASA Launches Risky Rescue Mission to Save Swift Space Telescope
The Swift space telescope, launched in 2004, has been monitoring gamma‑ray bursts for over two decades. Increased geomagnetic storms have accelerated its orbital decay, putting it at risk of uncontrolled re‑entry by late summer.
NASA announced a unprecedented rescue mission slated for 27 June. A custom‑built spacecraft called Link, developed by Katalyst Space in nine months for about $30 million, will be carried aloft by a Pegasus‑XL rocket launched from a Stargazer aircraft operating from an atoll in the Marshall Islands. Once in orbit, Link will maneuver to Swift, dock with it using three robotic arms, and boost the telescope back to its original altitude, potentially extending Swift’s science operations for another five years.
NASA manager Shawn Domagal‑Goldman emphasized the mission’s uniqueness, stating, “This is not any spacecraft – it’s an observatory with unique capabilities for astrophysics.” Katalyst Space’s Kieran Wilson warned the effort is “challenging and risky,” noting that many more expensive missions have failed for mundane reasons. If successful, the rescue could set a precedent for future satellite recovery operations.
