NASA launches rescue mission to extend life of $500‑million Swift telescope

NASA is undertaking a high‑risk rescue operation to prevent the uncontrolled re‑entry of the Swift space telescope, a $500 million observatory whose orbit has degraded faster than expected due to heightened solar activity. After scaling back Swift’s science program in early 2026, the agency contracted private firm Katalyst Space to deploy a robotic servicing vehicle called LINK. Launched on a Pegasus XL rocket on 30 June, LINK will autonomously rendezvous with Swift, capture it and gradually raise its orbit to about 600 km, keeping the satellite above a critical altitude through the autumn.

The mission marks the first time a commercial robotic spacecraft will dock with a government satellite that was not designed for on‑orbit servicing. Katalyst’s CEO Ghonhee Lee said the effort “demonstrates that we can quickly extend a satellite’s life and creates a model for maintaining spacecraft that were never built for it.” NASA’s astrophysics director Shawn Domagal‑Goldman called the operation “high‑risk, high‑reward,” emphasizing its cost‑effectiveness compared with building a replacement.

If successful, the project will showcase new capabilities for satellite maintenance and could open commercial opportunities for extending the service life of other assets critical to civilian and national‑security missions.
