NASA's Swift Observatory Rescue Mission Delayed by Launch Problems

NASA’s 22‑year‑old Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, launched in 2004, is losing altitude due to orbital decay accelerated by heightened solar activity. To prevent a re‑entry expected in 2026, NASA contracted private firm Katalyst Space to build the LINK robotic spacecraft, which will latch onto Swift and raise its orbit. LINK is to be deployed from a Pegasus XL solid‑fuel rocket, itself released mid‑air from a Lockheed L‑1011 carrier aircraft flying over Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

Multiple launch attempts have been aborted. Weather forced two holds, and a last‑minute launch‑vehicle anomaly with the Pegasus XL halted a third attempt on July 2, leading NASA to postpone the mission indefinitely. The $30 million effort, described as “high‑risk, high‑reward” by NASA officials, would be the first U.S. on‑orbit servicing of a satellite not designed for such operations and could extend Swift’s scientific life by up to a decade. The mission also serves as a test of robotic satellite‑servicing technology with potential military applications.
