NASA launches Snow4Flow campaign to study glacier melt

NASA has announced the Snow4Flow campaign, a research initiative designed to study Northern Hemisphere glaciers to better predict their response to rising Arctic temperatures. The project aims to gather detailed data on annual snow accumulation and current ice volume to improve future projections of glacier behavior through the end of the 21st century.

Between 2027 and 2029, researchers will deploy to Alaska, Svalbard, southeastern Greenland, and the Canadian High Arctic. The team will utilize a Basler aircraft equipped with laser altimeters and microwave radar sounders, alongside ground-based methods such as drilling snow cores and digging snow pits, to collect data for advanced computer modeling.
