NASA Mars mission communications provide patterns for signal detection
A peer-reviewed analysis published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters reveals that NASA's deep-space communications during Mars missions have created a predictable pattern of radio emissions that could assist in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Led by Pinchen Fan of Penn State, the study reconstructed NASA's deep-space uplink transmissions from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2024. The researchers found that for a distant observer positioned along the Earth-Mars alignment, the duty cycle of being within a direct radio beam was approximately 77 percent.
The study emphasizes that these transmissions are a byproduct of routine spacecraft operations rather than intentional messages to the galaxy. Instead of relying on the chance occurrence of radio leaks, the findings suggest that AI-driven detection efforts could use these geometric patterns to more effectively search for technological signals in specific regions of the sky.
