NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captures new images of Martian gullies

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has captured new high-resolution images of Martian gullies as the planet enters its spring season. These images, taken by the HiRISE camera, show dark spots where gas is breaking out from beneath carbon dioxide ice, carrying sand and dust with it. Scientists monitor these sites frequently to observe how the sublimation of dry ice moves rocks and dust across the surface.

The release of these geological images has also triggered social media speculation regarding peculiar rock formations. While some online observers have suggested the structures might be artificial, planetary scientists attribute these perceptions to pareidolia, the psychological tendency to see familiar shapes in random geological patterns. NASA continues to use the visual data to document surface erosion and mineral distribution.
