NASA mission reveals complex structure of ionospheric sporadic E layers

Researchers have discovered that sporadic E layers in the ionosphere possess a much more complex structure than previously understood. These invisible plasma layers form approximately 100 kilometers above Earth, created in part by metals like iron and magnesium left behind by disintegrating meteors.

These layers act as radio mirrors, causing signals to bounce unexpectedly. This phenomenon can disrupt radio communications, create false radar targets, and introduce uncertainty into GPS positioning systems.

Data for the study came from the Sporadic E Electrodynamics Demonstration (SpEED Demon) mission, which utilized a suborbital rocket launched from NASA's Wallops Launch Complex in Virginia. Led by researchers from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the mission successfully observed the layers from multiple points simultaneously, overcoming previous limitations of weather balloons and satellites.
